BMW SERVICE SCHEDULES

Your BMW will have a particular type of service schedules and will fall into one of two categories:1. Condition based servicing. Otherwise known as CBS

2. Non-CBS. Otherwise known as Scheduled Servicing or sometimes SIA

How do you know which one? Well at a very high level CBS was introduced to the around 2002 on the 7 series and the end of 2003 for 5 series and later in 2006 for 3 series. (Exceptions to this rule are the Z4 and the X3.)

If you check in your service book it will say inspection I / II or it will list individual items such as, Oil service , air filter, micro filter, fuel filter, brakes, if you have the second option then you have CBS service schedule.

CBS permanently monitors oil levels and the degree of wear and tear on individual components. It also checks the time/mileage recommendations for fixed services. It analyses this data and tells you when a service is next due.

Your car will either have iDrive or it won’t. How do I know? If you have a shiny knob like this on the central console between the front seats – then you have iDrive.



No knob – no iDrive

CBS Non-iDrive First, put your key in and start the engine. In the display between the speedometer and the rev counter and indicator will briefly appear that looks something like this.

This initial ‘pop-up’ shows the approximate mileage until your next service or the date the service is due, whichever comes sooner.

In some models it may be color coded to indicate urgency.


To find out more detail about what’s required you need to use the indicator stalk.

Push the rocker switch up until you reach the option that says ‘Service’ or ‘Service Info’ then press the button on the end that says ‘BC’.

This takes you into the service display. The most immediate service is displayed first. It’s represented by an icon.

You can use the up/down switch to scroll through all the service items and each one will have a mileage and /or date when the service will become due.

Here are some symbols with what they are for,

lease note – every 3rd Oil Service the engine air filter is changed and the diesel filter is changed at the same time (if your car is a diesel). So it’s worth checking (via your service book) if you’re on the 3rd (or 6th or 9th etc) Oil Service.

Also, CBS only monitors brake pads and not brake discs.

Place key in the ignition and the iDrive screen will illuminate.

Press the iDrive wheel down once.Scroll to ‘info sources’ and press the wheel again

Scroll to or make sure you’re on the ‘service’ option.

Press the wheel down again.

You can scroll through each service icon.

The icons are the same as the ones above (same as non-iDrive)

There’s also a traffic light colour coding indicating when a service is due.

Green- OK (no action needed)

Amber – due soon

Red – due now

Scroll down (clockwise) to ‘vehicle information’

Press the iDrive wheel down to select/enter

Scroll to ‘vehicle status’

Press the iDrive wheel down to select/enter

Scroll to the car icon (see below)

You can now see the status of each service item.

The mileage countdown or date countdown is shown on the right underneath the cool picture of the cars chassis and engine.

The traffic light system applies here as well.

Green- OK (no action needed)

Amber – due soon

Red – due now

And last but by no means least

Non-CBS. Otherwise known as Scheduled Servicing

If your car is non-CBS you may have a display on your car when you turn the ignition that looks like this

What basically happens is over time & miles (and depending on how you drive) the green lights slowly go out.

When the amber light comes on you should get your car booked in.

When the red light comes on your over due.

The display may also indicate what’s required.

The service intervals should go like this.

Oil Service, Inspection 1, Oil Service, Inspection 2, Oil Service, Inspection 1, Oil Service, Inspection 2 etc

When you switch on the ignition, you’ll see up to five green lights on your LED display. The fewer of these that come on, the sooner your next service will be due. The green light will go out once the car has started.

Following an oil service, your Service Interval Indicator is re-set, and you will now see five green lights again when you switch on the ignition.When the green lights have all disappeared, an orange light will come on, together with the word “Inspection”. As before, if you ignore this a red light will come on, indicating that the inspection is overdue.

At regular intervals, the clock symbol will appear, telling you when your brake fluid needs to be changed. Depending on the model you drive, this will either be every year or every 2 years. On completion of your brake fluid change, our Service Interval Indicator will be re-set and the clock symbol will disappear.

Here's whats done on each service:

Oil Service

  • Engine oil and oil filter are replaced with new

Inspection 1

  • Engine oil and oil filter are replaced with new
  • Air filter is replaced with new
  • Micro filter is replaced with new
  • *At the corresponding interval coolant is changed (every four years at the latest), fluid is added as needed
  • *At the corresponding interval brake fluid is replaced (every two years at the latest)
  • All fluid levels checked and topped up

Inspection 2

  • Engine oil and oil filter are replaced with new
  • Spark plugs are replaced with new
  • Air filter is replaced with new
  • Fuel filter is replaced with new
  • Micro filter is replaced with new
  • Full Electrical Diagnostics
  • Full mechanical check
  • All fluids checked and topped up inc rear diff
  • *At the corresponding interval coolant is changed (every four years at the latest), fluid is added as needed
  • *At the corresponding interval brake fluid is replaced (every two years at the latest)

Normally

  • Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years
  • Coolant should be changed every 3 years
